Johnson Satisfied With Draw

10 August 2014

Manager Lee Johnson was satisfied with the 2-2 season opening draw with Colchester United.

Jonathan Forte grabbed a double on his debut to give Latics the lead but they were eventually pegged back by a second half strike from substitute George Moncur.

Speaking about the draw, Johnson felt disappointed to concede the second goal but could not fault the effort of his players.

He said: "I'm happy with certain parts of the game and I don't think it was a bad result to come here on the first game of the season and get a draw.

"From a 2-1 leading position and seemingly cruising, it was disappointing. The goal we conceded was poor but we did score two fantastic goals with great individual play from Forte to start with and the second was a real team goal.

"I thought our midfield was excellent today. We pack our bags and get back to SportsDirect.com Park pleased with the day."

Forte, who joined the club last week on a free transfer from Premier League side Southampton, equalised with a superb individual strike and the manager has been delighted with his mentality since linking up with the squad.

"It was really pleasing to see because he's worked hard all pre-season," the gaffer commented. "We need to give him a bit of love and that goal will go a long way to set the tone with the fans."

Middlesbrough are the visitors to SportsDirect.com Park on Tuesday night in the Capital One Cup and the 33-year-old believes his side can cause an upset.

"We will be looking to test them and they are a good Championship side," added Johnson. "It will be a tough game but one the lads should be relishing and hopefully we can get off to a good start and win the game."
