Latics Defeat Championship Opposition

2 August 2014

James Dayton, Liam Kelly and Jonson Clarke-Harris grabbed the goals for Latics as they beat Championship side Huddersfield Town in their final pre-season friendly.

Nahki Wells had reduced the arrears in the second half but it was Latics that come away with victory in front 1,885 supporters.

The game took a while to get going but it was the visitors that had the first chance. Sean Scannell cut the ball back for Ollie Norwood to strike but Joseph Mills did well to block the shot.

Minutes later, Scannell should have put the Terriers ahead after being put through on goal but the forward smashed his effort wide of the target.

Latics started to come back into the game and had the ball in the net on the half an hour mark but Clarke-Harris was ruled offside.

The hosts took the lead on 35 minutes through Dayton. Carl Winchester's excellent through-ball fell into the path of Brian Wilson and the defender crossed for the onrushing Dayton to fire home from 12 yards.

Latics gained momentum from the goal and had a perfect opportunity to extend their lead a minute later. Clarke-Harris was bundled over the area and the referee awarded the host's a penalty kick.

Clarke-Harris picked himself up to take the penalty but Terriers goalkeeper Alex Smithies saved well before Kelly bundled home the rebound to make it 2-0.

Oldham Athletic started the second half brightly, with neat passing football on show.

With chances limited, Latics were more than holding their own against their Championship counter-parts.

Huddersfield reduced the arrears on 69 minutes through Wells. A neat through-ball found the onrushing striker who poked the ball past Paul Rachubka to score.

Latics restored their two goal advantage three minutes later through a wonderful effort from Clarke-Harris. The striker opened up his body from 25-yards and fired his strike into the top corner to take his tally to six for pre-season.

The home side made a host of substitutions as it was the last time manager Lee Johnson could see trialist's in action before the season starts.

The game lost its momentum with Oldham Athletic happy to keep the ball and protect their lead. Referee Mr P Tierney finally signalled the end of the game giving Latics victory in their final pre-season fixture before the start of the new season.

Attendance: 1,885 (450 visiting supporters)
