Cup Exit Angers Johnson

7 December 2014

Manager Lee Johnson was disappointed to see the club exit the FA Cup at the second round stage.

The only goal of the game came in the 87th minute courtesy of a George Elokobi own goal and the gaffer did not feel his players gave him enough yesterday.

He said: "I'm very disappointed to be out the cup. Obviously we wanted to have a good run and we saw it as an opportunity today in front of our home fans to advance but it just goes to show that when you think you've cracked it, if you like, it comes to bite you on the backside. Our players went out there and didn't quite perform as they have been.

"We had two key players out in Mike Jones and James Wilson and they have been excellent for us. They have been good over a period of time and it is disappointing when you've got to make three or four changes but our squad should be good enough to compete.

"I thought we did compete but both sides cancelled each other out and we've got done by the smash and grab in the last two minutes. I don't want to get greedy but I expect more from my players."

Johnson had a warning for his players after yesterday's cup exit: "I feel like there is punishment needed for that one so I'll determine what it will be. I don't think there was enough going on verbally or physically so there will be some form of punishment," the boss commented.

"They will have to lick their wounds and get ready for Saturday because I don't want to stand for that. Unless they see the error of their ways then we can't get better. It's about getting better and we have to get better. We have lost and out the cup but we are very much in with a shout of the play offs."

Johnson continued: "If we play like that, we won't pick up enough results so we have to up our game. It is disappointing because you can use the financial side to add a couple to the squad so it looks like we will have to maybe stick with the same squad or reduce and that's just the way it is. Certain players have got to step up to the mark and we have players back which is good and we move on."
