Young Latics beat Wrexham at Chapel Road
The young Latics continued to keep up the pressure at the top of the North West Conference League with a convincing win against reigning champions Wrexham at Chapel Road on Saturday morning.
Manager Tony Philliskirk was pleased with his charges but felt they should have won more comfortably: "I felt that we dominated from start to finish, if anything the game should have been over by half time. Their keeper has played well, making good saves from Danny Byrnes, Jordan Bove and Jordache Walters, we wasted several chances too"
The Latics played well all over the park throughout the game, from back to front, taking the lead before half time through Walters, after a neat move between Kyle Hardman and Bove. Walters finishing with a drilled effort from 16 yards.
The visitors changed their approach in the second half, their direct play causing a few problems for the Latics defence for the first fifteen minutes of the half.
Philliskirk's three substitutions, Haydn Foulds, Will Kinder and Ben Grant helped change the game back in his sides favour.
From a Wrexham corner kick Grant picked up the ball, running almost three quarters of the length of the pitch, before laying it into the path of Bove to slot home.
The second goal was a big relief for Latics staff and players alike, and within a couple of minutes the game was safe. Hardman finishing off great approach play from Foulds, Walters and Bove, his volley giving the keeper no chance.
