LMA Performance of the week award

30 January 2014

Home win against Posh earns Latics the accolade

The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week, the LMA Performance of the Week Award should go to Oldham Athletic following their excellent 5-4 home win against Peterborough United in Sky Bet League One on 25 January 2014.

Latics manager Lee Johnson will receive a specially engraved crystal football in a presentation to commemorate the award.

Oldham Athletic won their first LMA Performance of the Week Award of the season after his side staged a stunning comeback at Boundary Park.

In this nine-goal thriller the visitors were 3-0 up at half-time and after Gary Harkins and David Worrall replied for Latics shortly after the break Nicky Ajose added Posh's fourth. A James Wesolowski goal started the comeback and after Harkins' added his second, Genserix Kusunga scored the winner to complete the dramatic turnaround.

After the match, Johnson was delighted with the outstanding performance;

"What a fantastic day for the fans. We were woeful in the first half and at half-time we hit rock bottom and fair play to the lads, I've got to say what great character and attitude and heart to produce that second-half display and score five goals.

"I think sometimes you've got to make bold decisions. You could say I got it wrong if you like with my starting 11, that would be fair to say.

"Sometimes you've just got to hold your hands up and say alright it hasn't worked. Tactically I don't think we were at it in the first half hour.

"This day was about an unbelievable game and unbelievable entertainment and that's why we all love football because stuff like that can happen."
