Manager Lee Johnson believes new signing Timothée Diéng will be a big hit with supporters after signing a two-year contract with the club, with the option of a third.

The Frenchman can operate in both defence and midfield and was a star performer in Latics' 8-1 victory over Curzon Ashton on Thursday night.

After impressing on trial, the manager believes Diéng has the qualities to become a big hit at SportsDirect.com Park. 

He said: "He has been in and really impressed us. We don't just bring trialists in on a whim, we believe he's got good pedigree. He's been at Brest and his brothers are both footballers.

"He comes from a good family, he's a good character, good age, very athletic and we want to teach him a couple of roles. We're generally delighted because we think he could be good in League One."

With the midfielder an unknown quantity, Johnson outlined what Diéng can bring to the side.

"He's very smooth on the ball and can hit a diagonal pass with both feet," commented Johnson. "He defends well and can play centre half, right back or the number six position and that's what we need."

Diéng became the fifth summer signing for Latics during this close season and the gaffer is happy with his transfer activity so far.

"Things are taking shape nicely. We have a lot of clubs in our bag if we get the ones in that we want and that's what we need," Johnson said.
