Johnson: "Pleased With The Performance"

16 July 2014

Manager Lee Johnson heaped praise on his players after last night's 2-1 victory over Premier League side Newcastle United.

Second half goals from substitutes Timothee Dieng and William Gros secured pre-season victory in their first home friendly of the season.

New signing Siem De Jong had fired the visitors into the lead on 14 minutes but it was the hosts that came away from SportsDirect.com Park with the win.

In his post match interview, Johnson started by reflecting on the game and believes there are good times ahead for Oldham Athletic.

He said: "I was pleased with the performance. Obviously it was a great goal from them and sometimes you've got to hold your hands up and concede that it was a superb strike but our substitutes came on and looked energetic and bright.

"We scored two fantastic goals on the back of that so there is a lot of positivity moving into the new season. I was delighted with the result because it shows that the group is fit, mobile and pacy for our level and there is a lot of positive signs."

Dieng netted his first goal for Latics after signing for the club on Monday and the manager was impressed with the youngsters performance.

"He's a great kid and he's got a lovely attitude. He really wants to come and do well and you could see he's nice and smooth on the ball," Johnson commented.

"He's very athletic and you could see that with the way he took his goal. He's been doing the same thing in training as well against Miguel Llera so it shows how high he can leap."

With an attendance of 2,919, the gaffer was quick to praise supporters and is hoping to entice more through the gate.

"It was a good turnout from the Geordie's and we made it a good atmosphere also so people can go home and tell a friend it was good and hopefully they will come next time," said Johnson.
