Jones: "I Want To Get Promoted"

11 June 2014

New signing Mike Jones has wasted no time signalling his intent with Oldham Athletic next season.

The 26-year-old signed a two-year contract with Latics yesterday after leaving Crawley Town earlier in the summer.

Jones, who enjoyed a successful spell with Bury earlier in his career, believes the manager Lee Johnson is putting together a team which should be challenging for promotion next season.

He said: "I'm very excited by signing and by what we can do next season.

"I don't want to put too much pressure on ourselves but I'm not here to sit in a relegation battle or mid-table; I want to get promoted. I want to play in the Championship and with what the gaffer is getting together, I'm confident.

"That's the reason I've signed here because I think we will be at the right end of the table. We'll go into it level-headed and we know there is a lot of work to be done but hopefully we'll be right up there."

The midfielder revealed that the gaffer was a huge influence behind his move to Boundary Park.

"Lee was a very big motivation in me coming here. I was very impressed with what he had to say and how he wants to play football and of course it is up north so I'll settle up here and enjoy my football here.

"I spoke to the manager before last season finished and I've been impressed with what he's said and how he sees me. It has impressed me about how he's gone about what he wants to do here so I'm really excited by joining this club," continued Jones.

"How he plays football was a big attraction. I want to play football and that's how he says he wants his team to play so I'm looking forward to where I want to play, working hard and improving as a footballer. Hopefully we can get up there at the start of the season and have a right good go at it."

The players are back in training in little over two weeks time and with friendlies against Premier League opposition Newcastle United and Championship side Huddersfield Town, Jones cannot wait to get started.

"It was a tough season last year because I played near enough every game so I've given my body a few weeks off but I've been back on it so when I get back, I should be raring to go.

"It's going to be good to test ourselves in the big friendlies. Pre-season is all about working hard and getting yourself fit so I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things," said the midfielder.
