Latics new signing Brian Wilson expects the club to kick on from their impressive end of season form and challenge further up the league next season.
The defender, who joins from Colchester United, signed a two-year contract with the club and has played alongside the manager during his spell with Bristol City.
He revealed his relationship with the gaffer played a major role in his decision to sign for Latics.
He said: "I've known the gaffer now for a good couple of years. He's a winner and that's what I want. I chose not to sign again at Colchester because I wanted to push on up the league and I feel we can do that with Oldham Athletic.
"As a player, the manager is a winner and that's what strikes me about him. I'm looking forward to working with him.
"I kept an eye on a couple of games last season and they went ten games unbeaten so I'm hoping to get a good pre-season under my belt and kick on at the start of the season."
Ambitions are high among the new signings and Wilson echoed the comments of Mike Jones and believes the side can challenge higher up the table next season.
"There is no reason why we can't finish in the top six. I played against the team last season and they were very hard to break down," commented the former U's captain.
"They give you very few chances and when they do get the lead, it's hard to break them down. Leyton Orient just missed out on promotion last season when they missed out in the play-offs so there is no reason why Oldham can't do that."
Pre-season starts in just over two weeks time and the 31-year-old believes he has the right quality to bring something different to Oldham Athletic.
"I've played over 300 league games now so I've got a lot of experience. I'm decent on the ball, I'm quick and strong so I give it something different," said Wilson.
"I've not been on holiday so I've been working hard and keeping my fitness up. I really want to kick the ground running."
