Johnson: "We Were Excellent"

23 March 2014

Manager Lee Johnson heaped huge praise on his side after Saturday's 1-0 victory over Crawley Town.

Danny Philliskirk scored the only goal of the game on 18 minutes to secure the vital three points and the gaffer spoke of his delight after the game.

He said: "It was a great three points. I thought we were excellent in the first half and we were unlucky again not to get that second goal.

"I'm just pleased for the club really. From the lads to the fans, I thought they were superb today because they never stopped. We really felt we needed that win and fair play to the lads, if you see the video, you will see that we were comfortable.

"We defended resolutely. I thought Rachubka was good and I thought the backline was solid. We finished the game strong in the last five or six minutes."

The players reacted to the strong noise coming from the home supporters and Johnson believed the fans played a huge role in the win.

"I thought the fans were superb today. They were probably the calmest people in the house," admitted the gaffer. "There was a constant drone of music and songs that they were singing and even the main stand got involved so I'm really pleased for them as well because I know they needed that."

With games against two table topping sides coming up in quick succession, the boss admits he needs some luck with injuries after losing another key player.

Johnson explained: "We're going to have to look after Korey but we've lost Joel Byrom for a month which is another terrible situation for us because we can't just get that little bit of luck that we need."

Leyton Orient and Brentford are the next opponents for Latics and when asked whether his side can kick on from this, Johnson said: "Of course we can."
