MATCH REPORT: Latics Held By Red Devils

15 November 2014

Oldham Athletic miss the chance to move into the play-off spots with a 1-1 home draw with Crawley Town.

Daniel Johnson had given Latics a dream start on his debut for the club but Gwion Edwards equalised minutes before the half time break meaning both sides had to settle for a point.

Gwion Edwards thought he had given the visitors the dream start on three minutes. The winger poked home Gavin Tomlin's cross into the box but the linesman had his flag up for offside fortunately for Latics.

Latics did not let that affect them and and found the lead seven minutes into the game. Johnson, on his debut, picked up the ball on the edge of the box, surged into the area and confidently stroked the ball past Jamie Ashdown to give Latics the lead.

The home side kept up the intensity and the ball set up for Danny Philliskirk five minutes later but the forward could not find the target with his volley.

Latics were stroking the ball around confidently and new loan signing Johnson at the fore-front of most of attacks.

Midway through the first half, neat work in the midfield between Mike Jones, who was playing against his former club, Brian Wilson and Philliskirk saw the latter shoot from the edge of the box but Ashdown comfortably saved.

Minutes later, Philliskirk again ground space 20 yards from goal but the Crawley stopper saved well.

Joesph Mills, who was voted the club's October Player of the Month, was causing problems on the left-hand side as his surging runs into the box were troubling the Crawley Town defenders.

Against the run of play, Crawley equalised three minutes before the break. A combination of errors in defence saw Edwards strike from 25 yards which sailed beyond Paul Rachubka to bring the Red Devils level.

Latics made a change at the break, bringing on Michael Tidser in place of Jonathan Forte with the midfielder taking up a central role.

Athletic went in search of a goal to restore their lead and they almost got it on 55 minutes. The former Crawley Town midfielder Jones struck from the edge of the box which Ashdown turned behind the post.

All the pressure was with the home side and only minutes later Jones again saw a shot deflect wide.

Jones' delivery from set pieces were dangerous and on the hour mark Timothee Dieng somehow put his header wide from inside the six-yard box.

Latics were trying to pick holes in a stubborn defence but had no luck in breaking down the visiting team.

Athletic were throwing everything at their opponents and were almost caught on the counter attack ten minutes from time.

Goalscorer Edwards managed to shoot from 25 yards which just trickled wide of Rachubka's goal.

Five minutes from time, substitute Dominic Poleon chased down a loose ball, fed Philliskirk in the box but could not unfortunately steer it on target as the Red Devils flung men in front of the ball.

Two minutes of additional time was greeted with groans from the home fans and Latics could not find the breakthrough and had to settle for a point.
