REPORT: Latics Draw With Dale

30 September 2014

Oldham Athletic came from behind to draw 1-1 with Rochdale in a behind-closed-doors game played at Chapel Road.

Rhys Turner headed home in the final ten minutes of the game after Calvin Andrew had put Rochdale ahead in the first half.

Dale shaded the possession stats early on and took the lead from the penalty spot. Timothee Dieng was adjudged to have handled in the area and Andrew sent Joel Coleman the wrong way to put the visitors ahead.

Latics responded well and went close on two occasions but neither Danny Racchi or Turner could find a way past the Dale goalkeeper.

The visitors started to dictate possession and should have extended their lead just before the break but the crossbar prevented a Rochdale defender from scoring.

The home side responded after the break and retained possession well. The lively Jordan Bove almost equalised early in the half but his header was saved by the Dale stopper.

Amari Morgan-Smith was the next to go close for Latics as his shot from 20 yards was deflected over. From the resulting corner, youth team defender George Edmondson narrowly headed wide.

With only ten minutes of the game remaining, Turner latched on to the end of a Michael Tidser free kick and nodded the ball past the goalkeeper to level the scores.

Latics were in the ascendancy and could have won it in the final minutes but Morgan-Smith's header dropped just wide of the post.

Speaking about the game, manager Lee Johnson said: "I like playing Rochdale because they are a good test for us. They are a similar size club to us in statue and there are five or six players in this game that need to be excelling to force their way into the first team.

"I was a bit disappointed with the first half as they did not have the enthusiasm I wanted but I thought we were much improved in the second half. They need to be like that all the time because it's good to play football at Oldham.

"People have got to enjoy playing for this football club and prove that they are ready for a first 11 shirt."

Oldham Athletic: Coleman, Brown, Edmondson, Dieng, Truelove (Etches), Dayton, Racchi, Tidser, Morgan-Smith, Turner, Bove (Jacobs).
