Kelly Has His Sights Set On The Big Kick Off

2 August 2015

Manager Darren Kelly is focused on the first game of the season against Walsall FC after seeing his side lose their final pre-season game to Carlisle United.

Rhys Murphy had pulled a goal back in the second half for Latics but goals from Angelo Balanta, Derek Asamoah and Steven Rigg won the game for the Cumbrians.

Speaking after the game, Kelly said: “It was disappointing in terms of the performance and it is not ideal as it is the last pre-season game but you can guarantee that by next week we will be ready and prepared for going to Walsall.

"Overall we could have done better. We have to look forward to next week and make sure we are ready and prepared for that.”

With only six days remaining until the start of the League One campaign, the manager has set his sights on improving the defence ahead of the big kick off.

"There are people to come back into the defence. We have someone coming on board on Monday as well and it is an area we have looked to improve throughout pre-season,” commented the manager.

“We are working hard to bringing the right personnel into the club so at the minute it’s one player coming in.”

Murphy opened his account for Oldham Athletic with his second half header but the 36-year-old admitted he is expecting more from his strikers.

He said: “I’m delighted to see Rhys to get on the scoresheet. Ideally I would have liked more goals from the strikers but hopefully they are saving themselves for next week.”
