Kelly Hoping Big Support Will Help Players On Saturday

27 August 2015

Manager Darren Kelly cannot wait to experience his first local derby clash as he takes his Oldham Athletic side down the road to face Bury.

With only 13 miles separating both stadiums, Latics enter the game unbeaten in the league and the manager is hoping to continue the run on Saturday.

He said: "I have watched Bury a few times this season and they are a good side. It is important we are on our game on Saturday and I know that if we are on our game we can win any game.

"In the final third we need to be more productive, effect, dynamic and creative. The good thing about having a free week is that we are able to work on it and hopefully it will click into place this Saturday.”

With more than 2,000 Latics supporters expected to make the short trip, the manager believes they can make the difference on Saturday.

“I’ve said it from day one, the support has been amazing,” he explained. “Whether it be home or away, they really get behind the team.

“Hopefully come 5pm on Saturday, they will be there cheering especially as it’s a local derby and we hope to have three points.

“I can’t reiterate how big a part they play. Their voice to get behind the team is massive and it makes a huge impact on the players. When we go down on Saturday, I hope they do the same and maybe more if possible.”

The gaffer was dealt an injury blow as captain Liam Kelly has been ruled out for up to six weeks after undergoing surgery on his knee. “He is a massive loss,” said Kelly.

"With Jake and Brian missing as well, it is three bad loses to the team but it is important we gather around them and show them we care. It is an opportunity on Saturday for a player to come in and stake a claim for a place in the side.

“We have a lot of quality in midfield so it’s important if they get in, they stay in."

The injury could force the 36-year-old into the transfer market with the window set to shut on Tuesday at 6pm.

“We are always looking but we have made no secret of the fact we need to ship out before we get people in,” he admitted. “We’re working hard on that and we’ll see what happens after that."
