Manager David Dunn took the positives from yesterday’s defeat against Sheffield United in the second round of the FA Cup.
Matty Done’s goal soon after the half time interval was the difference between the two sides but the gaffer was encouraged by the performance of his players.
He said: “I thought the goal was sloppy to give away but I don’t have too many complaints, certainly after last week.
"There was criticism about the desire and commitment, certainly some of it a little unfair, but today I couldn’t question it one little bit. I was really proud at how they performed.
“The battling qualities you need to come to a place like this against a really good side was very unlucky to at least get something out the game.
“We had the better chances, hitting the post in the first half and Cassidy’s header is a big chance for us.
“I’ve just said to them that if they perform like that every week then we will quickly start climbing the league table.”
Jake Cassidy possibly had Athletic’s best chance of the game in the second half heading over from close range.
“He will be disappointed as well all are but I thought for his first 90 minutes to come back and put a performance in like that was exceptional,” admitted Dunn.
“There is no criticism from me in terms of his performance."
