Cup Run Continues For Youth Team

11 February 2015

The Oldham Athletic youth team stepped one step closer to a national final after defeating Shrewsbury Town 2-1.

Devante Jacobs and Ben Grant struck in the opening 20 minutes of the game to put Latics two goals ahead going into the half time interval.

Shrewsbury pulled one back after the break but the young Latics defended resolutely to seal their passage through to the semi-final of the Youth Alliance Cup.

Speaking about the victory, Academy Phase Coach, Pete Wild, said: "We are over the moon with the victory. We backed the result up from Saturday and it was a tough place to go so we did really well.

"We had plenty of chances to kill the game off and we had to live some dangerous moments, especially in the last minute, but the lads showed great character to hold on.

"We are starting to pull a really good run together. We have a lot of lads back fit and they are raring to go. It's a crucial time of the year for them with a lot of games coming up so there are plenty of opportunities to impress.

"Apart from the FA Youth Cup, this is the second best competition to be involved in. If we can get to the final of the northern section and win that, then we play the winners of the southern section.

"It's a great chance for the lads to get more silverware after the great performance at Blackpool last season."
