Eight girls from Blue Coat School last week travelled to Leeds to represent Oldham Athletic in the area final of the Kinder+Sport Football League Girls Cup.
The Kinder+Sport Girls Cup comprises of a six-a-side competition for U13 girls that culminates in a grand final prior to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium in March.
The road to the finals starts when each Football League club organises a local competition for all local schools wishing to take part.
The event last week was held at the Leeds Futsal Arena and saw nine schools from across the north of England compete against each other. The girls from Blue Coat school faced Hartlepool, York City, Barnsley and Scunthorpe United in the group stages.
From the four games the girls finished with a total of 7 points which unfortunately meant they missed out on progressing to the next round by only a single point.
Rachael Watson, Blue Coat PE teacher commented on the day: "It was a great day, the girls were gutted when they conceded a last minute goal to Barnsley otherwise they would have made the semi-finals. Overall it was a great experience for the girls to play some quality competitive football against teams across the north."
Wendy Noble, OACT Administration Manager, added: "It was an honour to spend the day with the girls from Blue Coat for the event in Leeds. They behaved immpecably well and represent their school and Oldham Athletic fantastically well. It was really unfortunate that they missed out by a single point but they can be hugely proud of themselves."
The result from the day were:
Oldham v Hartlepool United 0-2
Oldham v York City 3-0
Oldham v Barnsley 1-1
Oldham v Scunthorpe United 5-0
Everyone at Oldham Athletic Community Trust would like to thank all of the schools for taking part in this year’s Girls Cup.
