Kelly Happy With Pre-Season Victory

29 July 2015

Manager Darren Kelly was pleased with the overall performance of his team after last night's 2-1 victory over FC Halifax Town.

Latics kept the ball confidently, notching two goals in a dominant first half display, however, the gaffer expects improvements from his players in the second 45 minutes.

He said: "We came up against a well organised Halifax side and I know what Neil Aspin is all about; he is big on his work ethic and they challenged our players but it was great for them to get minutes under their belt.

"We dominated first half but we made changes in the second half and the game changed. There was a lot of personnel changes and people have to adapt to the game but pre-season is all about getting all players minutes under the belt. We have a fully fit squad and it's working well so long may it continue.

"There were lots of opportunities and we showed a sprinkle of what we can do. It's great to see Forte back. He adds something different in attack but we have to manage his game time.

"It's important we are expressive and creative in attack. What I wanted us to do is shoot more and I thought we did that in the first half but we didn't do it as much in the second, whether that was down to the personnel changes. We kept possession well but with no real good penetration."

Latics included five trialists in last night's squad and the two which particularly impressed were the centre half duo of Fraser Kerr and Josh Thompson.

"They will need a lot of games because that's their first minutes since last season," Kelly added. "They are big lads, athletic and they have only been in that day so I'm pleased with how they performed."

Carlisle United are the opponents on Saturday in the final pre-season game before the start of the season and the 35-year-old has spoke of his expectations for that game. "The players' minutes will be upped on Saturday and I'll be looking at a more settled side," he said.

"We have a full squad in there and they have good minutes under their belts meaning that any player could be called upon if needed during the season."
