LEAGUE ONE INSIGHT: Wigan Athletic

13 July 2015

In this feature, we take an in-depth look at the 23 other teams in Sky Bet League One this season.

Wigan Athletic

Nickname:
The Latics

Founded:
1932

Ground:
DW Stadium

Capacity:
25,138

League position last season:
22nd - Sky Bet Championship

2014/15 top goalscorer:
James McClean (6)

Manager:
Gary Caldwell - The 33-year-old took over the reigns at Wigan at the end of last season after Malky Mackay was sacked as manager.

He was powerless to prevent the Latics to drop into the third tier of English football for the first time since 2003.

Caldwell earned a three-year contract with Wigan this summer and has strengthened his squad with the signings of Craig Davies, Richard O'Donnell and highly-rated Max Power.

The former Scottish international, who boasts over 50 senior caps, has had an illustrious football career, playing in the Premier League and Champions League.

He played over 100 games for Celtic and ended his football career with Wigan Athletic where he also played over 100 games.

Caldwell will be looking to get Wigan out of this division at the first time of asking, with the bookies pricing them second favourites in the division.

Key player:
Craig Davies - The striker will be familiar to Oldham Athletic supporters as he served the club for two years in 2007-09.

Davies enjoyed success with Chesterfield in 2010, winning the League Two title and finished the club's top goalscorer before earning a move to Barnsley.

His good form there saw him move to Bolton Wanderers where he scored 10 goals in 53 appearances.

After his release this summer, the Wales international joined the Latics this summer.

Head-to-head:
The history books show that Latics have faced Wigan 13 times in all competitions, winning four and losing eight.

Latics last faced Wigan in 2003 but lost 3-1 as Wigan eventually went on to win the league that year.

Sky Bet League One odds:
Win outright: 7/1
Promotion: 5/2
Relegation: 20/1
