MATCH REPORT: Latics Cruise To Pre-Season Victory

17 July 2015

Oldham Athletic comfortably dispatched Scottish League Two side Stirling Albion 5-0, rounding off their pre-season trip with a win.

Trialist Alen Ploj grabbed a goal in either half to help Latics on their way whilst further goals from Danny Philliskirk, Dominic Poleon and Rhys Turner sealed the victory.

Latics started the game on the front foot, dictating possession and forcing the Stirling defence into problems.

James Wilson was the first to go close for Latics. A well-worked free kick routine found the central defender at the back post but goalkeeper Chris Smith.

Athletic took the lead on seven minutes through Philliskirk. Liam Kelly drove into the box, fed Murphy who cut the ball into Philliskirk who finished confidently past the goalkeeper.

Kelly went close minutes later before Poleon just slid a shot wide of the post.

Two crosses from Jack Truelove on 20 minutes caused the home side problems but unfortunately nobody could finish the loose ball.

Joel Coleman was forced into action just after the half hour mark but he did well to push away Lee Hamilton's effort from 25 yards.

Latics started to take control of the game and doubled their lead on 36 minutes through Ploj.

He played a neat one-two with Poleon and finished past the goalkeeper, despite him getting a hand to the ball.

Rhys Murphy went close with a free kick before Poleon made it three on 40 minutes with a neat finish past goalkeeper Smith, beating him at his front post.

Latics made seven changes at the break but it was one of the starting 11 which grabbed the fourth.

Philliskirk neatly played Poleon in behind the defence and his low cross into the box was guided into the back of the net by Ploj.

Latics were coasting and continued to press the Stirling defence with George Green at the centre of the action.

His defence splitting ball found the path of Turner who slotted into the bottom corner to make it five for Latics.

With the weather conditions taking a turn, the wet surface was helping Latics play swift attacking football.

Turner was denied on 78 minutes and Philliskirk struck wide from the edge of the box seconds later.

Substitute Danny Byrnes almost made it six for Latics but his effort dragged just wide of the far post.

All in all it was a good work out for the players and rounded off the week in Scotland with a comfortable victory.
