MATCH REPORT: Latics Suffer Pre-Season Defeat To Championship Opposition

21 July 2015

Oldham Athletic suffered pre-season defeat to Championship side Bolton Wanderers, losing 2-0.

Liam Feeney grabbed the opening goal of the game on 21 minutes whilst an own goal from Brian Wilson on 45 minutes rounded off the scoring.

Latics did start the game brightly and they had the first chance of the game on seven minutes but Dominic Poleon's shot fired over the bar.

The visitors started to grow into the game with Feeney causing the defenders a problem.

His shot on 18 minutes was blocked for a corner by trialist Gavin Gunning and from that resulting set piece Gary Madine's free header fired wide of Joel Coleman's post.

Bolton took the lead on 21 minutes through the impressive Feeney. He beat the offside trap and smashed past Coleman from 10 yards to give them the advantage.

Latics came back into the game but trialists shot was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Ben Amos from 25 yards out.

George Green was holding the ball well in midfield and looked the most likely to make something happen for Latics in the final third.

After the half hour mark, Darren Pratley struck wide of the post before Madine should have extended Bolton's lead.

Stephen Dobbie crossed into the path of the striker but he could not connect properly with the ball and the chance was lost.

Gunning was proving to be key at the back as he blocked a Feeney shot before Coleman denied the forward on 40 minutes.

The Trotters did extend their lead on the 45 minute mark in bizarre circumstances as no fans celebrated the goal.

After a cross into the box, Madine and Feeney were at the back post but it appeared the last touch came from Wilson who bundled the ball into the goal to make it 0-2 to the visitors.

It was a slow start to the second half with both sides making a host of changes.

With the substitutions slowing the game down a lot, it was hard for Latics to build up any momentum.

With only 20 minutes of the game remaining, Coleman pulled a great save to deny Stephen Dobbie.

The striker opened fire from 25 yards but the young goalkeeper did well to tip wide.

Latics were struggling to get much rhythm in the second half but substitute Danny Philliskirk tested the palms of Ben Amos as the goalkeeper saved his shot from 25 yards.

Substitute Jack Truelove, who was introduced on 77 minutes, looked promising on the left hand side as two deep crosses had to be dealt with by the Bolton defence.

As time ticked away, the game fizzled out and Latics suffered their first official pre-season defeat.
