MATCH REPORT: Latics Suffer Pre-Season Defeat

25 July 2015

Two second half goals from Blackburn Rovers condemned Oldham Athletic to defeat at SportsDirect.com Park.

Nathan Delfouneso gave the visitors the lead on 58 minutes and Craig Conway doubled their lead in the final ten minutes of the game.

After a swarm of bees invaded the pitch before the game, we finally got underway.

Latics started the game brightly, keeping the ball comfortably and moving the ball confidently around the field.

The first chance of the game came in the opening 10 minutes as Rhys Murphy's strike from the edge of the box was well turned behind by Blackburn stopper Jason Steele.

The next man to go close was from an unlikely source. Connor Brown found himself furthest forward but his strike from 25 yards flew over the crossbar.

Blackburn almost took the lead midway through the half but Jason Lowe's header was off-target.

However, Latics almost got their noses in front a minute later as Matthew Kilgallon's back pass was under hit but Carl Winchester was tackled by Steele as he raced through on goal.

Latics were on top and just after the half hour mark Lee Croft's shot from the edge of the box was headed over the crossbar by a Blackburn Rovers defender.

Shots were flying in on goal as Joseph Mills powerful left-footed strike was saved well by the goalkeeper.

The game did have a pre-season feel to it, however, as the scores were level at the half time break.

Latics made a host of substitutions at the break with Jack Truelove, Timothee Dieng, Rhys Turner, George Green and Alen Ploj all entering play.

It was a slow start to the second half but again Latics were keeping the ball well.

However, it was the visitors who took the lead just before the hour mark.

Craig Conway's free kick found the head of the onrushing Delfouneso and he nodded past David Cornell giving the goalkeeper no chance.

The visitors started to dominate proceedings with Latics struggling to create a clear-cut opportunity.

Truelove's cross into the box on 65 minutes caused havoc inside the Rovers box but unfortunately no Latics forward was there to convert the rebound.

Another host of substitutions started to slow the pace of the game down.

With 10 minutes of the game remaining, Green lined up a free kick from 25 yards but his up and under was comfortably saved by substitute goalkeeper Simon Eastwood.

The visitors doubled their lead on 84 minutes through Conway. The forward raced inside the box and thundered a strike past Cornell to win the game for Blackburn Rovers.
