Latics Set For Capital One Cup Draw Tomorrow

15 June 2015

It is fair to say Oldham Athletic have not had the best of luck in the Capital One Cup competition in recent years.

Over the last 10 years, Latics have failed to reach the second round of the competition nine times out their last 10.

That one victory came against Mansfield Town in August 2007 as Latics smashed four to secure a place in the second round of the competition.

Neil Kilkenny and John-Paul Kalala had put Athletic into a two goal lead at the half time break.

After the interval, Stags defender Jonny Mullins pulled a goal back but two late goals from Deane Smalley and Craig Davies sealed a comfortable win for Latics.

Unfortunately, Athletic were brushed aside in the second round of the competition by Burnley.

Goals from Andy Gray, Robbie Blake and Ade Akinbiyi consigned Latics to a 3-0 defeat.

Darren Kelly's men will be looking to draw inspiration from the Oldham Athletic side of 25 years ago.

In 1990, Athletic beat Leeds United, Scarborough, Arsenal, Southampton and West Ham on route to the final of the competition before losing in the final to Nottingham Forest.

In recent years, Latics have been brushed aside by Championship opposition at home in the form of Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County and Middlesborough.

Kelly will be looking to turn around that run of form as he starts his managerial campaign with the club.

The draw for the first round of the competition takes place tomorrow morning at 10am.

Latics have been unseeded for the draw and could face a Championship side or a team in the top 12 of League One last season.

Full details of the draw will be revealed on the official website tomorrow.
