Vale Victory Delights Holden

4 March 2015

Caretaker boss Dean Holden could not hide his joy at full time as he recorded his first victory in charge.

Mike Jones struck the only goal of the game with a trademark free kick just before the half time break to claim all three points for Holden's men.

Speaking after the game, Holden said: "It was a magnificent response from everybody from Saturday's disappointment and that's what we were after. We had commitment, desire and a good shape about us.

"Possibly when we look at things in the cold light of day, we were a bit deep in the second half and invited too many balls into the box but when they did come in, the lads threw everything in front of the ball.

"When Jake was needed on a couple of occasions, he pulled off some great save. Overall, it was a real pleasing performance. The win is fantastic but the performance, the work rate the lads put in, I'm very happy with that."

Adam Lockwood made his return to competitive football for the first time in ten months and Holden reserved special praise for his acting assistant manager.

"It was everything you expect from him. We didn't expect him to get through 90 minutes. We kept shouting on to him from 60 minutes onwards asking if he was alright and he winked across to say he was good to go.

"It shows what he's all about. He's had a career-threatening injury and he's prepared to throw himself on the line and win a towering header at the death to keep us in the game.

"It wasn't just Locky, it was everyone. A lot has gone into the last couple of days behind the scenes. The players and the staff have all been pushing to get a performance tonight and it came out in the arena for everyone to see."

He continued: "It was a very important clean sheet for everyone. It will give the lads a lot of belief and the fans were singing none stop throughout the game and it was a good night for Oldham."
