Youth Team Win To Set Up Northern Final

25 March 2015

Oldham Athletic youth team, sponsored by the Safeguard Group, booked their place in the final of the northern section of Youth Alliance cup after victory over Accrington Stanley youth yesterday.

Two goals in the last ten minutes of the game turned the game on its head as Latics nicked the win to set up a final with Wigan Athletic.

Ben Grant equalised for Latics on 83 minutes after Accrington took the lead just after half time and deep into additional time, Jack Tuohy fired Latics into the final with a cooly taken finish.

Youth team boss Tony Philliskirk, who took the team despite his first team commitments, was delighted with his player's work-rate and praised his side for reaching another cup final.

He said: "We are very pleased. It is the second time in two years and we were lucky enough to win last year's competition so it's great for the club.

"We are now in the northern final of the Youth Alliance cup so if we win this, we can go into the grand final to play the southern champions so it's great for the lads to be involved in high profile games.

"It will be a tough game away to Wigan but anything can happen on the day. We have played them twice this season and they have both been very close affairs so it's a game we look forward to and relish.

"I was pleased with their performance, especially after a few of them were told they would not be offered professional contracts last week.

"It was a scrappy game which lacked a lot of quality due to the conditions. We dominated the second half but found ourselves one down early on after an individual error.

"We continued to put pressure on Accrington and managed to grab a goal back with less than ten minutes to play with possibly our most obscure attack.

"We continued to have a go and the lads wanted to win the game before the end because it was penalties if the scores were level at the final whistle.

"Our best bit of quality in the game was saved until the last minute and Tuohy put the ball into the net to win the game for us and put us in the final."

The final will be arranged in due course so check the website to find out the latest information.
