Convincing Win For Youth Team

19 October 2015

Tony Philliskirk’s youth team side got back to winning ways at the weekend, comfortably defeating Grimsby Town 6-0.

Striker Brendy Glackin notched a 20 minute hat-trick to set Philliskirk’s side on the way to victory.

Rio Murray made it four before the break whilst goals in the second half from Ryan Leonard and Lee Knight sealed the convincing win.

Speaking about the game, Philliskirk said: "We scored after 13 seconds and we dominated totally for 25 minutes. We were three goals up in the first 20 minutes of the game with Brendy doing what he does best.

"We added another one before the half time break and we said we needed to be more ruthless in the second half because we missed so many chances.

"The second half is always difficult to replicate what happened in the first half. To be fair to Grimsby, they defended resolutely.

“We put a few under 16s on after the break and we did lose a bit of our fluidity but it was great to put them on and give them their first taste of youth football.

"It was a convincing win but I’m not getting carried away. The difference between this week and last week was scoring the early goals and that gave us confidence.

"I was critical of my players last week but this week I will praise them because it was a good performance.”

Injuries are wreaking havoc through Philliskirk’s youngsters. Several second year scholars are suffering with longer-term injuries but that is allowing under 16 players more opportunity.

"We’ve got so many players injured and they are the second year group. We are training with nine or 10 players and we have to manage them correctly.

“I’m very mindful that there are a few lads showing tiredness at the moment but they are still doing every session and playing every game.

“We are virtually an under 17 team playing in an under 18 league but there isn’t a lot we can do about that.

“It’s great for the under 16s to be involved and that’s the positive."
