Last night’s first goalscorer Mike Jones was buzzing to finally get off the mark for the season and to help his side win their first three points since the middle of August.
The midfielder opened the scoring in the first half with a lovely curled finish into the far corner and he was delighted to net his first of the season.
He said: "I’ve hit it and I couldn’t believe how nicely it bent around but I’m glad to get my first goal and more importantly it’s such a relief to get back to winning form.
"We definitely deserved to win the game. We had the better chances and they had a lot of play which didn’t hurt is. It was disappointing they got in at the end but it was great character from the lads at the end and we fully deserved the win.
“I just wanted to get a shot off for my goal. I created half a yard and luckily it went in and I’m made up to get off the mark. It’s been disappointing not to score up to now seen as we are a couple of games into the season so hopefully I can go onto a little bit of a run now.”
Looking comfortable at one goal up going into the final minutes of the game, Jones described his feelings after his close friend Nicky Ajose levelled.
“When they equalised it was sickening,” he admitted. "If we went home at 1-1 we would have been gutted so the reaction, and for Philliskirk to get a goal, is unbelievable from the lads and it’s something we have deserved. Hopefully we can kick on from this now.”
It’s now full steam ahead for Saturday’s derby against Rochdale and the 28-year-old is expecting his side to go on a good run of form now.
“The lads are buzzing and can’t wait for Saturday now,” he said. “We’ve got a great set of lads and the squad is coming on well now so we will got there full of confidence now."
