David Dunn has added young defender Theo Vassell to his squad on a contract until the end of the season, with the option of a further year, subject to Football League clearance.
The 18-year-old, who has spent 10 years with Stoke City coming through their youth ranks, has been training with Latics for the last couple of weeks and has done enough to earn a professional contract.
Manager Dunn said: “Theo is a young lad who came in on a trial basis and has really impressed all of us. He is really athletic, only 18 and definitely one for the future.
“He has a lot of very good attributes and we spoke to Mark Bowen at Stoke City about him so we have decided he is a good young signing for us.
“When I spoke to the board about him, it was one for the future but I’m sure if he got an opportunity he would take it as well.”
Vassell will wear the number 23 shirt for the rest of this season.
