Youth Team To Spend Pre-Season In Portugal Next Year

27 October 2015

The Oldham Athletic youth team will fly out to Portugal next summer as part of their pre-season schedule.

Through the Erasmus+ programme, in conjunction with Ecorys, Tony Philliskirk’s youngsters will head to Portugal for two weeks to prepare for the 2016/17 season.

Philliskirk said: “We managed to gain funding through the Erasmus+ programme for a pre-season tour next season for the youth team. We did this for the pre-season 2014/15 where we went to Holland and we had a fantastic time there.

“As soon as we got back, I applied through the funding agency Ecorys, and we were successful so we have the funding to go away again next summer.

“We looked for somewhere different this time and I remembered the first team went to Browns Sport and Leisure facility in Portugal, Vilamoura, a couple of years ago under Paul Dickov.

“I remember they said it was a good facility and had a good training programme so we approached them and they accepted.

“It’s something to look forward to for everyone and it’s not cost the club a penny so we are very grateful to the National Agency, Ecorys and the Erasmus+ programme for funding that.

"It will be a mixture of football and education. There will be fixtures arranged against local teams in Portugal and York City are also out there at the same time as well.

"We’ll do some sight seeing, visit a club over there and it allows the players to bond and to learn as well.

“It’s a project which the young lads will always remember and learn by so it’s something to really look forward to.”

The youth team will head out on July 4 and return on July 17.
