Young defender George Edmundson was delighted to help secure a clean sheet in his first league start of the season.
The defender was selected for the first time under John Sheridan and he did not let the manager down with a solid display on his league debut.
He said: "I’m absolutely buzzing. I thought I did alright tonight. It was great support from the fans and from Anthony Gerrard which really helped me.
"Playing alongside Gez is only going to make me a better player and he talks to you throughout the game and so does Brian Wilson so it was good.
"I thought I’d keep it simple. Defenders defend, so if the ball needs clearing, just clear it and if you can pick out a pass, make sure you find the man.”
Reflecting on the game, Edmundson felt his side fully deserved the three points at Roots Hall.
“Forte could have had a couple, Curtis [Main] has got his goal and Jake [Cassidy] did well when he came on but all round I thought we all played well as a team,” he commented.
Crewe are the visitors to SportsDirect.com Park on Saturday, and asked whether he would like to be involved on Saturday, he responded: “I hope so.
"James Wilson might be back and the gaffer might opt to go with experience. If that’s the case I will carry on working hard but if I do play, I’ll keep going.
"We take every game as it comes. We have Crewe on Saturday now and that’s where the focus is now. They come to us and we will be going for the three points to secure league safety.”
