Manager John Sheridan heaped huge praise on his players after the 1-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra ensured his side would play Sky Bet League One football next season.
Jonathan Forte was the man in target in the second half to claim the win and Sheridan’s ninth in charge since returning to the club.
Speaking after the game, the gaffer said: "It’s a great achievement from the players. They are the ones that need all of the praise because they were in a sticky period and it looked doubtful but since I’ve come in they have responded well.
“You have to give them the credit for driving on, forgetting about what went on before and they responded to me and I could not have asked anymore of them.
"One thing I asked since day one was a lot of effort, fight and willingness to keep us in this division. I don’t think we’ve played attractive football but we didn’t need to pass teams to death.
"It’s just about having that desire to compete. Full credit to the players.”
Yesterday’s game was far from a classic but the 51-year-old praised his side for digging in deep and grinding out a result.
“It’s another clean sheet but I don’t think we’ve played well,” Sheridan admitted.
"I expected the game to be like it was funnily enough. We have had some tough games and we did what we needed to do before this game.
"Deep down I thought we were safe anyway but I was never going to say that. We needed to win just to make sure and we ground the result out and we are good at keeping clean sheets."
"I’m pleased for the supporters as well as they really got behind us. It’s the togetherness which has got us over the line.
“It’s a weight off everyones shoulders and now I’ve got to focus on next season and try and get us competing at the other end of the league."
