Clarke: “I’m Like A Kid On Christmas Eve.”

5 August 2016

Defender and skipper Peter Clarke feels like a child on Christmas Eve as the start of the 2016/17 Sky Bet League One season starts tomorrow afternoon.

The defender joined Latics over the summer and has been made captain by manager Steve Robinson.

With the season just one day away, the central defender cannot wait to get started.

He said: "I’m like a kid on Christmas Eve now. It’s getting near and I’m itching to get going. I love being out there on a Saturday afternoon, Tuesday evening or whenever the game is so I’m looking to it and I can’t wait to get going.

"We have got a belief and structure to how we want to play. That won’t change massively throughout the season but at the same time we believe it will be affective and we will be able to pick up plenty of points doing that.

"You start pre-season and you know it’s going to be a tough time and a hard slog. You look at the first game of the season and you work towards that day and thankfully we are closing in on that and me and the lads cannot wait to get down to Millwall and get started.”

Whilst pre-season has not gone the right way results wise, Clarke believes there are plenty of positives to take.

“We have had a decent pre-season, results might not have suggested so but there has been a new team put in place, new bodies into the building and we are all starting to click and gel now,” he said.

"The start of the season is a busy period. You have pre-season under the belt so you know you are in the best shape you can be and it will test us but we are looking forward to them.

“The season is here and we all want to get off to a good start.”
