Flynn: “It Was A Real Team Performance.”

10 August 2016

Midfielder Ryan Flynn felt his side fully deserved to progress through to the second round of the EFL Cup last night.

Flynn scored the opening goal of the game in the 18th minute and what a finish it was.

The midfielder picked up the ball on the left, charged 30 yards, danced his way into the penalty box and cooly slotted past Jussi Jaaskelainen to put Latics ahead.

Speaking about his goal, he said: "I just tried to get into the penalty area and drive at them. The gaffer was on us to be positive and get at them and I think we did that.

“Brian Wilson and Paul Green helped me massively which helped me to stay high up and big Lee Erwin was outstanding.

“I’m just glad it went in as it’s my first goal for Oldham and hopefully there is a lot more to come.

“It’s not about me, it’s about the team and I’m delighted we got through to the next round."

Athletic progressed through to the second round as Josh Law’s late strike sealed victory.

“It was a well deserved win and one we probably needed,” Flynn admitted. “It was a real team performance tonight.

“People read too much into pre-season and they shouldn’t do but everyone here knows what we can do and the victory was fully deserved.”

Whilst the win marked Steve Robinson’s first in charge of the club, Flynn was quick to regain concentration and hopes to get the first league victory of the season on Saturday.

“Our focus changes now and we rest and recover for Walsall on Saturday,” he said.

“Hopefully the crowd are right behind us like they were tonight and we put on another performance because that’s all we can do."
