Burgess Happy With First Goal & Is Now Eyeing More

13 December 2016

Defender Cameron Burgess netted his first goal at the weekend and is aiming for more as Oldham Athletic face Walsall in the Checkatrade Trophy tonight.

The 21-year-old scored in the 10th minute of the game against Oxford on Saturday which was his first goal in professional football.

“I’m absolutely buzzing with my first professional goal,” he admitted.

“It’s a bit of a monkey off my back to get my first one out of the way and hopefully there are many more to come.

“I burst the net, the goalkeeper had no chance so I’m happy with the finish.”

After exiting the FA Cup last Monday, the Fulham loanee gave his thoughts on Saturday’s performance against the U’s.

“It shows that the lads care,” he commented. “Everyone really wanted to put it right and Saturday’s game wasn’t the prettiest but we dug in and got a good point in the end.

"Within the changing room, everyone believes in each other. We all know we can string a couple of results together and be fine in the league table.”

Burgess will be part of the travelling squad to Walsall this evening and he is confident heading into the game.

He said: “Everyone is raring to go and wants to get a good result. It’s a tough game but we know what we need to do and we’ll go out there and try and do our best to get a result.

“They play some good football and they have some clever individuals in their team so we will have to watch out for them.

“We have done our homework, we know what they are about and we need to go there and build on what we did on Saturday."
