Croft: “It Was Nice To Get On The Scoresheet.”

14 December 2016

Winger Lee Croft notched his first goal of the season last night against Walsall and was happy to see his side progress through to the second round of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Croft’s goal from 25 yards came 20 minutes from time to equalise for Stephen Robinson’s men.

Further goals from Cameron Burgess and Lee Erwin sealed the win and Croft was delighted to net his first of this campaign.

He said: “When was my last one? Bury last year. I tell you what, they’re good goals when they come along.

“It was nice to get us back in the game, it was nice to get on the scoresheet and start the comeback."

Latics now face Mansfield Town in the last 16 of the competition and the winger has already set his sights on the ultimate goal.

“I wouldn’t say we played particularly well tonight but we have come away from home and scored three goals and we’re through to the next round of the cup,” he commented.

“The gaffer said before the game it is a good chance to Wembley, a lot of people might never get that chance so it’s something we are pushing for."

Confidence had taken a beating in the dressing room following the FA Cup exit last week but the winger admits the mood is now much more positive ahead of Saturday’s game.

“We are happy,” he said. “We’ve gone to Oxford and got a point, we’ve come here and won the game so hopefully we can put in a good performance at home against Southend on Saturday.

“If we play well we can beat anybody but we just have to make sure we are on our game and take the performance from Oxford and tonight’s second half performance into Saturday and start the Christmas period off with a win at home.”
