Latics Need To Keep The Pressure On, States Gerrard

26 February 2016

Defender Anthony Gerrard wants to pile further pressure on the teams around Latics with victory on Saturday against Scunthorpe United.

Latics are yet to lose whilst Gerrard has been with the club after he joined before the game with Shrewsbury last month.

Three clean sheets have followed and Latics have only conceded two goals in their last five games, meaning he has added stability to the back.

However, the 30-year-old is keen to play down his sole influence and said: "It’s a collective thing. If one part doesn’t function right then the whole unit doesn’t.

“Everyone knows their roles and their responsibilities then it is down to the whole team.

"We all understood that when the manager came in that we were in a bit of a pickle and the quicker we get out the better. Hopefully we are on our way to doing that.”

With the club on a five game unbeaten run, the central defender is keen to continue the recent form.

“We are five unbeaten at the moment but the way things were, we were eight or nine points behind going into the Shrewsbury game,” he commented.

“Now we are only one point behind so we are piling the pressure on the teams below us and above us.”

Tomorrow’s opponents Scunthorpe United find themselves in midtable and Gerrard wants to continue the momentum the club have created.

He said: “The last couple of games, we have produced the performances and the wins. The middle teams in the league are hit and miss and that’s why they are there.

"One week they are fantastic and another week they are not because if they had consistency they would be further up the league. We don’t know what we could encounter with Scunthorpe.

“You could turn up and they have an off day, and we have a good day and take the points or they could turn up and be on song.

“If we keep performing like we have in the last five or six weeks, I am more than confident that we can get a positive result.”
