Sheridan Felt Draw Was A Fair Result

28 February 2016

Manager John Sheridan admitted a draw was a fair result against Scunthorpe United yesterday.

Danny Lafferty gave Athletic the lead with only 12 minutes remaining but Iron striker Kyle Wooton equalised deep into the game.

That result extended Latics’ unbeaten run to six and reflecting after the game, Sheridan believed a draw was probably a fair outcome.

He said: “I wouldn’t say we deserved to win the game but we were in a great position to win it.

“I thought in our second half performance we come right back into the game and created more problems that we did in the first half.

“We had to change things last minute as Forte was ill with flu and the shape didn’t really work well.

“Saying that, they didn’t really cause us many problems but I didn’t think we were that effective going forward.

“I think the change made us more positive and we scored a great goal, however I think a draw was probably a fair result so we can’t be too down.

“We were so close to getting a great three points which is a shame because it feels like we have lost the game.”

The manager did bemoan how Scunthorpe’s equalising goal did come about.

“I’m disappointed with the goal we conceded because we tried to keep the ball from a short corner and the ball goes out of play,” he commented.

“I don’t look at the goal when it goes into the back of the net, I look 20 seconds before the goal.

“They’ve got a throw in in their right back position where we let them get out and two or three passes later, the lad has put the ball into our box and that should never happen.

"They are the little things of naivety that we have got as a team and we need to get that out of us because we were in a great position to win the game. That is the biggest disappointment.”

Latics are in good form at the moment and it is important they keep the momentum up to get out of the relegation places.

“It’s a big month for us now coming up with all the home games and we have got to take our away performances into the home form,” Sheridan said.

"We are on a little run now, we are unbeaten in six and we are just gutted that we didn’t get the three points. It was a great following again from the supporters  again today.

"I expect us to win games at home now, especially with the confidence we have in the team. Hopefully Forte and Holloway will be okay for Tuesday. I’ve got to pick the right team to get the right results.”
