Sheridan Proud Of His Players After Wigan Draw

14 February 2016

Manager John Sheridan was proud of his players after the goalless draw with high-flying Wigan Athletic and felt his side deserved all three points.

Carl Winchester and Matt Palmer had Athletic’s best chances of the game and at the other end, Joel Coleman kept the scores level with two excellent saves late on.

Speaking about the performance, Sheridan believed his side could have got more from the game. “I thought we were unfortunate not to come away with three points,” he said.

"I thought we were tremendous in the first half and I’m proud of the players. It’s a good point and nobody expected us to get a point here today with the way they’ve been scoring goals and I’ve watched them a few times but I thought we looked a good team today.

"We had a very good shape about us. First half I thought we were really good. You have to give them respect and I had to change my formation a little bit. It’s a well deserved point and it’s unfortunate it’s not all three.

“Joel saved well with his foot and then at the end he’s made a great one handed save so other than that, I was very comfortable.

"We kept them very quiet in the first half and Cammy [Dummigan] did a great job to stop Wildschut. We’ve had great support from the fans today.

“They never shut up and they got right behind the team and the team showed them a performance that will give them a bit of hope that we can stay in the division.”

The one negative from the game was the injury picked up by defender Anthony Gerrard. “We’ll have to assess him,” Sheridan explained.

"It was just a clash of knees and he’s a bit sore. It’s not a twist or anything so we’ll just have to see how he is. We need him on the pitch because he’s got the experience and he talks a lot.

"It was a blow but we had to change it and young Aaron came on and you can see he is a handful. He’s short of match practise but he put a shift in and in a couple of games you will get to see what he’s all about.

"He’s big, strong and a bit of a unit. His goalscoring record isn’t prolific but I know what he’s all about. He’s played against my teams and he’s caused us problems so I like him.

“Some people were questioning why I brought him in but I really like him as a player and he will be beneficial to us."
