Sheridan Wants Consistency From His Players

4 February 2016

Manager John Sheridan is asking for more consistency from his players as they prepare to face Blackpool in Sky Bet League One this Saturday.

After getting back to winning ways against Shrewsbury, Latics have had to wait 10 days for their next game against the Seasiders this weekend.

Despite the wait for a game, the gaffer has stated the need for his side to become more consistent.

He said: "We’re preparing for a tough game against Blackpool on the back of a good performance against Shrewsbury 10 days ago. We’ve got to carry that form into the remaining games.

"I always talk about consistency and if I can get that out of the team then we’ll get the results we are after.

"I ask for standards and if I’ve got the players giving me seven or eight out of 10 every game then we’ll win games. That’s what I have to concentrate on. We’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves.

“I know what our aim is and we feel we have to win nine or 10 games to stay in the division and that is all we’re focused on.”

Two players who left Latics in January, Danny Philliskirk and Mark Yeates, are expected to line up in Blackpool’s squad this weekend.

They have helped improve the form of the Seasiders, guiding them to 18th in the league.

“They have had a couple of good results and it gets belief in the team that they can get out of the position they are in so full credit to them,” commented Sheridan.

“Like ourselves, they don’t want to be where they are in the table so a couple of wins gives them that little bit of leeway.

“We’ve got two games in hand on them and we’ve got to play them twice in the next few weeks so they are big games and we know the importance of winning the game.

“It’s not really about the performance, it’s just about getting the three points and that’s what we’ll be trying to do.”

Despite not bringing anybody in on transfer deadline day, the manager full expects to add to his squad next week and has identified the positions he is looking at improving.

He said: “There will not be any players in before Blackpool, obviously, but believe me I’ve been trying my socks off. To be fair to the chairman, he is allowing me to bring players in.

“I could have brought two players in but I don’t want to do that just for the sake of adding to the squad.

"I want a striker who is going to give us something different and I feel like we need a player with pace out wide so they are the two players I’ll be looking to get in next week when the loan window opens.

“I understand the games are going away and we have Tuesday games coming up so I need to get them in and I’m certain they will be here next week."
