Manager Steve Robinson feels there is a lot more to come from his side ahead of the Sky Bet League One season opener against Millwall next week.
Robinson saw his side fall to pre-season defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town as a third free kick in as many games won the game for the Mariners.
Speaking about the game, the gaffer said: "You can still see that we are a little bit off in terms of fitness but we have to catch that up and we can’t keep making these excuses.
“On a different day we created four or five chances in the first half which you would expect Billy [Mckay] or Lee [Erwin] to take their chances but they didn’t and we lose a goal.
"We didn’t pick up second balls in midfield and that was disappointing today. We want to be a second ball team and have high energy in that part of that pitch and we didn’t have that today and we got punished for it so it’s better to be punished now rather than during the season.
"We told people a few realities of where we are and what we need from them and that’s what we expect to happen over the coming week.
"I thought at times we lacked a bit of urgency and energy. I’m a little disappointed with the final 20 minutes of the first half but we came out for the second half and started brightly but in terms of the game overall we can do a lot better than that.”
Full back Jamie Reckord did equalise in the second half courtesy of a header from a set piece, which was a well worked routine.
“It was a super delivery from Ollie [Banks] and we will be a threat from set plays, it’s not something we showed our hand at today because I’m sure Millwall was here watching us,” he admitted.
“It’s pleasing to score a goal but we’ve lost the game to another free kick."
With the season drawing ever nearer, the manager wants to add at least one more face to his squad before next weekend’s game against Millwall.
“We are still looking at a few players this week to add to the team and I know what I want to do,” he said.
“Pace is something we need out wide and hopefully up top too so we’re aware of that and I have an idea of about eight of the team for next week but there are still places to play for."
