Midfielder Ryan Flynn put in a man of the match display to help Oldham Athletic reach the second round of the FA Cup yesterday.
He scored one and set up the other after replacing Carl Winchester, who went off with injury, after nine minutes as Latics ran out 2-1 winners over Doncaster Rovers.
The midfielder, who now has three goals for the season, praised the team for getting the win.
He said: "Carl Winchester picked up a little niggle in his hamstring so hopefully he’s not out for too long but I was happy to get on the field and help the boys out.
“I thought we played really well in the first half and we thoroughly deserved to be 1-0 up.
“We could have been a bit more ruthless in the second half but that just happens with the way results have gone for us recently, it’s more natural to sit back but I thought we dug in.
“We conceded the penalty which was disappointing because it would have been nice to get the clean sheet but I think we deserved the win and we are happy to be in the hat for the next round."
The win in the FA Cup has financial benefits for the club and the midfielder now wants his side to capitalise on the win and take it into the coming games.
“It’s a good win and we have another game on Tuesday in the cup which could put us through to the second round of that as well so hopefully we can build up a little bit of momentum and take that forward,” he commented.
“We have had spells where we have won but not capitalised on it, Scunthorpe for example, but we need to put a run together.
“We haven’t done that yet so we need do that, recover and go again on Tuesday.”
Asked whether he had any preferences to face in the second round, Flynn responded: “We get who we get.
“We obviously want to get through to the third round and draw one of the big boys, that’s obviously the aim and we will take whoever we get in the second round.”
