Robinson: “The FA Cup Is A Great Showcase For A Club Like Ours.”

4 November 2016

Manager Stephen Robinson believes a good cup run can breed confidence into his squad ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup first round game against Doncaster Rovers.

Latics were drawn against the League Two outfit two weeks ago and believes it is a good chance for his players to gain some confidence.

He said: “It’s a great showcase for a club like ourselves and it gives us a great chance for us to progress and the financial rewards are huge to our club.

“I’m still living off my goal against Liverpool, something which I remind the boys of every day, but if someone stands up and does that then it’ll be great.

“It might give us an opportunity to give us a big club in the third round but we have to take care of Doncaster first and not get ahead of ourselves.

“There is no points at stake in the FA Cup but in terms of progression it is massive to us.

“It does take heat off the league but we are looking forward to it because the FA Cup is special and hopefully we’ll get a half decent crowd and try make the result count.”

Doncaster are currently third in Sky Bet League Two so knows it will be a tough task tomorrow afternoon.

“When the draw came out, straight away we knew it would be tough,” he commented.

“They are flying high in the league below and I don’t think there is much difference in the top half of their league and the bottom half in ours.

"They are a good club and have been up there like ourselves. We know what to expect, Darren Ferguson will have them well drilled but we are well prepared for that.”

The manager has hinted at changes for tomorrow’s game and wants to gain more consistency in his squad.

“We’ve won one, lost two, won one, lost two so that’s why we are at the bottom end of the table,” he admitted.

“I said to the players that there are chances, if you put the performances in then I will make changes and I will put players into the team who have done well so Saturday’s team will be reflected by that.

"I will make changes. People have waited patiently for opportunities and I’ve been quite loyal and stuck by people but I’d love to be able to play the same team 10 games in a row.

"After the Scunthorpe game you think to keep the same team and then we didn’t get the same result or performance against Bristol Rovers. People deserve chances and they will get that.”
