Robinson: “I Was Delighted With The Performance.”

5 October 2016

Manager Stephen Robinson was delighted with the performance of his players after last night’s Checkatrade Trophy win over Fleetwood Town.

Two goals in the first half won the game for Latics and the gaffer expressed his satisfaction at last night’s performance.

He said: "I was delighted with the performance. We knocked the ball around well and the only frustrating thing is that it was night and day from Saturday.

"Everyone wanted the ball, everyone played on the front foot and there were a lot of positives in the game. Billy hit the post and a lot of crosses into the box.

"The strikers got into the central areas and they did that to the letter so we are really pleased.

"We wanted them to be brave and play forward and that’s what they did. I thought Ryan Flynn set us off tonight and I thought Billy Mckay impressed.

“They give us a lot of ownership to the game and their reaction to giving the ball away was superb at times.”

Mckay did open the scoring for Latics after great work from Flynn and the gaffer had positive words to say about the pair and scorer of the second goal, Lee Erwin.

“Billy Mckay, bar David Healey, is one of the best finishers I’ve ever worked with,” he admitted.

“I think there are more goals in Billy and I’ve got a real belief in him, hence why I’ve kept him in the team.

“I’m delighted Lee Erwin got a goal as well because his performance merited it and Ryan Flynn looked a massive threat throughout so we’re starting to see players step up to the plate and now we just have to get the consistently with it."

A healthy number of Oldham Athletic supporters made the trip to Fleetwood last night and the gaffer was pleased to record the win for them last night.

“The competition is a strain on everyone in terms of finance and the club’s don’t get the crowds in but I’m delighted for the Oldham fans tonight,” he said.

“I’m delighted they travelled up after work, saw goals and saw really good football.

“We passed the ball really well and everyone wanted it so it was night and day from Saturday for whatever reason and we need to find that reason and get everyone back behind us tonight."
