Ripley: “I’m Enjoying Every Minute Of It.”

16 September 2016

Goalkeeper Connor Ripley is enjoying every minute of his loan spell at Oldham Athletic.

The 23-year-old, who signed on loan from Premier League side Middlesbrough during the summer, was quickly installed as manager Stephen Robinson’s number one goalkeeper for the 2016/17 season.

Ripley is yet to miss a league fixture and the goalkeeper admitted he has really taken to the club.

He said: "I’m loving every minute of it. The fans have been really good to me and I’m just enjoying playing. It’s a higher standard than last season and I’m enjoying being a part of it.

“It’s not the start of the season we wanted as we would have liked more points but we are doing our jobs in defence and keeping clean sheets.

"We have got Clarkey who is an experienced player and Cameron Burgess who is playing very well beside him. Josh Law and Charles Dunne have come in and we seem to have gelled really well and it’s working.”

Last season, Ripley played at Scottish Premier League side Motherwell where Robinson was assistant boss to Mark McGee.

Whilst the goalkeeper is still getting used to calling Robinson ‘gaffer’, he believes the gaffer is improving the club all the time.

“We can’t joke about as much as we used to joke all the time but there is a professionalism that we have got to abide by,” commented Ripley.

"He does his own stuff and I do mine but we still have a little joke. At the end of the day, he is the gaffer and I’ve got to have that respect for him.

"He’s big on stats and what he’s trying to do is prolong our careers. He always says himself that he wished he did that as a player and it’s good.

“It’s bringing more of a professional era around the club and that is what we need."

Latics travel to the Ricoh Arena to face Coventry City tomorrow and he admits it will be a tough game.

“Coventry are a big club and they haven’t had the best of starts to the season so we have got to be careful as well,” he said.

“They will want the points and we desperately need the points as well so we are going to there and fight for them."
