MATCH REPORT: Latics Suffer Defeat On The Road

17 April 2017

Oldham Athletic were beaten in the final 15 minutes of the game as Ellis Harrison’s strike was the difference between the two sides.

The striker turned inside the penalty area and fired past goalkeeper Connor Ripley to deny him his 18th clean sheet of the season to equal the record.

Manager John Sheridan made three changes to the side which beat Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

Aiden O’Neill, Chris Taylor and Ryan Flynn came back into the side but it would be the hosts who had the first chance of the game in the opening minute.

Billy Bodin found space outside the penalty area and fired at goal but goalkeeper Connor Ripley managed to beat his effort away.

Cristian Montano almost capitalised on a loose ball minutes later but Ripley was out quickly to deny the striker, who caught him with a boot on the way past.

After no card was issued, Latics started to come back into the game and knocked the ball around with confidence.

Tope Obadeyi had two good chances minutes later as he headed over from six yards and struck wide of Joe Lumley’s goal.

Chris Taylor was finding plenty of space on the left hand side and he delivered onto the head of Obadeyi on 15 minutes but Rovers just managed to clear the danger.

The striker was at the heart of the action early on as he curled into the arms of Lumley from the resulting corner kick.

Latics were very patient in their build up play and created openings in the Bristol Rovers defence.

Two good chances for both sides followed as Lee Erwin fired wide from 25 yards and from the following attack, Bristol Rovers striker Bodin forced a great save from Ripley.

Latics had their best chance of the half on the half hour mark.

Obadeyi did well to turn his defender midway through the Bristol Rovers half. He raced through on goal, cut inside two defenders but took an extra touch instead of getting his shot away as the chance passed.

Erwin dragged a shot wide minutes later as Latics looked to capitalise on the pressure built up.

However it would the hosts who finished the half the stronger of the two sides as Montano curled an effort wide and Connor Ripley denied Ellis Harrison from 25 yards.

Late pressure from Bristol Rovers followed but Latics defended well as it remained goalless at the break.

Rovers had the first opportunity of the second half as Bodin slipped Luke James through on goal but the striker dragged his shot wide of Ripley’s goal.

A good chance for Latics followed as Flynn crossed into the box but Erwin was just brushed off the ball as he attempted to get there.

The chances started to dry up for both teams with manager Sheridan electing to make a double change just past the hour mark.

Ousmane Fane and Paul Green came on in place of Obadeyi and O’Neill as Flynn moved into attack.

Whilst Latics struggled to create a clear cut opening, Bristol Rovers started to take control of the game.

Byron Moore struck over the crossbar from inside the box whilst Ripley had to be alert to deny Sinclair from inside the penalty area.

The Gas did take the lead on 76 minutes through Harrison.

The striker created space in the penalty area, turned and blasted past Ripley to give the home side the lead.

Athletic responded well to going a goal behind and create plenty of chances in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Latics won a corner, it fell perfectly for Erwin to strike but the goalkeeper managed to pull off a save to deny the Leeds loanee from close range.

Captain Peter Clarke almost drew Latics level minutes later as he found himself furthest forward for Latics but he was denied at the last.

Latics had to be wary of the counter attack as Bodin broke free in the box but Stott was there to clear up the danger.

Lee Croft came on for the final five minutes of the game and in the final embers of the game, Flynn fired wide on a disappointing day for Latics.
