On this day in 1994, Oldham Athletic faced Manchester United in the FA Cup semi final at Wembley Stadium.

In a game that produced plenty of goals down the years, the initial 90 minutes ended as an uneventful 0-0.

With the score level at 90 minutes, an additional half hour of extra time was played at the national stadium.

There was 13 minutes left on the clock when Rick Holden put in a corner  which United goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel fumbled into the path of defender Neil Pointon who volleyed the ball into the net, sending the Latics travelling faithful into bedlam.

Joe Royle’s team set about preserving the lead but heartbreak struck with just a minute left to play.

United’s attack had the Latic’s defence under siege, but the Blue’s held out until a ball over the top was volleyed in by Mark Hughes.

The game ended level with a replay scheduled at Maine Road, three days later.
