On this day in 1991, Oldham Athletic secured promotion to Division One as they beat Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Almost 3,000 travelling fans made the long journey to East Anglia to see if Athletic could secure an automatic promotion place to the First Division by winning at Ipswich Town.

Just a year after stepping after stepping out at Wembley for the first time, Ian Marshall bagged two goals to give the travelling blue army the 2-1 result they needed to send them into delirium.

The win ensured that First Division football would be played at Boundary Park the following season for the first time in 68 years.

Speaking at the time, manager Joe Royle said: “I won’t say i’s an anti-climax, but I thought early on that the top three were the best sides.

“80 points will always get you up. The players are elated, but it isn’t as if someone scored the winner in the last 10 minutes of the last game. Promotion seems to have been with us for a long time.”
