REPORT: Latics Fall To Defeat In Final Pre-Season Fixture

1 August 2017

Oldham Athletic ended their pre-season campaign with a 0-1 defeat against a Manchester United XI.

United striker Callum Gribbin scored the only goal of the game in the final 15 minutes of the game to win the game.

Athletic dominated the opening 45 minutes and created a host of chances.

The first came in the opening five minutes of the game as Ollie Banks' cross found the head of Davies but United goalkeeper Kieran O'Hara pulled off a magnificent save to deny the striker.

Ryan McLaughlin was the next to go close for Latics on 16 minutes as he connected with an Aaron Amadi-Holloway cross but he struck over the crossbar.

Athletic continued to press for the opener as Paul Green fired over from close range five minutes later.

Latics dominated possession and looked good going forward, and should have taken the lead after the half hour mark.

Green received the ball in the penalty area, took it past the last defender and lifted the ball over the goalkeeper but it went the wrong side of the post.

Manager John Sheridan made a host of changes at the break, including the introduction of his son Jay at left back.

He was straight into the action as he crossed to the back post but Davies could not direct his shot on target.

United went close to the opening goal on 53 minutes as Matty Willock curled past the post, but a minute later, Latics thought they had gone ahead.

Davies swept home at the front post but unfortunately the linesman's flag was up as he adjudged the ball to go over the byline.

Two quick chances followed as Holloway struck just wide on the hour mark, whilst a Trialist took aim from distance which O'Hara had to push over the crossbar.

Manchester United XI took the lead completely against the run of play on 77 minutes through Gribbin.

The striker received the ball inside the penalty area and found the bottom corner to win the game for United.

Latics almost equalised in the final minute of the game through Sheridan but his header was well saved by O'Hara.

That now ends the pre-season campaign for Latics as Oxford United are the visitors on Saturday as the new Sky Bet League One campaign gets underway.
