MATCH REPORT: Latics Fall To Home Defeat

19 August 2017

Two first half goals condemned Oldham Athletic to defeat at SportsDirect.com Park.

Goals from Ivan Toney and Michael Jacobs secured visitors Wigan Athletic the win on a bad afternoon at the office for Oldham Athletic.

Manager John Sheridan made three changes to the side which lost to Walsall last week.

In came Gyamfi Kyeremah and Dan Gardner for their debuts as Latics lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation.

However, it was the visitors who started the game brightly and were ahead in the opening eight minutes of the game.

Toney met a cross into the box at the front post and he converted past Ben Wilson to give Wigan the lead.

The visitors were knocking on the door of another and got that on 15 minutes through Jacobs.

After a scramble in the penalty box, Jacobs managed to create room for himself and convert from close range.

Latics struggled to get into the game and Wilson was again forced into action midway through the half to deny Nick Powell from 18 yards.

Oldham Athletic started to get back into the game and created a host of set piece chances.

Ollie Banks delivered a free kick on the half hour mark which was attacked but not converted by Kyeremah, whilst Latics started to look more confident in possession.

A number of bookings followed as Cameron Dummigan was cautioned for a foul on Jacobs.

Wilson made a good save from Gavin Massey on 37 minutes and at the other end, Banks was close to dispossessing Morsy on the edge of the box which would have given him a goalscoring chance but the Wigan midfielder just managed to clear.

Latics started the second period brightly and almost drew level in the first minute of the half.

Kyeremah’s cross to the far post found Holloway’s head, he nodded back inside to Banks to strike but Christian Walton made the save.

Sheridan’s men had a lot of the early possession but clear cut chances were at a premium.

Wigan continued to come forward as Toney volleyed wide on the hour mark and minutes later, Evans had to be dispossessed by Rob Hunt as he looked to shoot.

Sheridan made changes on 70 minutes and brought on Courtney Duffus and Darius Osei and they both almost made an immediate impact.

Duffus crossed into the box for Osei but the striker’s shot was blocked.

Latics huffed and puffed but were met by a stubborn Wigan Athletic defence which they struggled to break down.

The best chance for Latics came in the final minute of the game as McLaughlin cut inside his defender but the goalkeeper made the save.

Seconds later, Osei was put through by McLaughlin but he skied his effort on a bad afternoon at the office for Latics.
