Philliskirk Hails Youth Team's Performance After Their First Win

21 August 2017

Oldham Athletic Academy Manager Tony Philliskirk has praised his Youth Team for their win over Burton Albion under 18s.

The young Latics beat the Brewers' youth side 1-0 on saturday at Chapel Road.

Philliskirk said: "I’ve been quite critical of how they’ve been in the last two weeks and we’ve tried to get a positive vibe going in training this week and the reaction to it was great.

"On Saturday, certainly for the first 76 minutes and then when we scored it’s probably one of the best performances we’ve had from a youth team for years.

"We were absolutely superb. Defensively we were a lot stronger a lot more resolute, we dominated the ball and there were a lot of outstanding individual performances.

"We built some great passages of play, their keeper played well and made some good saves but ironically when we did score in the 76th minute it was a good set-piece delivery from Chinedu [Uche] which the keeper spilt, Max Norman followed it up with a good striker’s instinct and Francois Antoine scrambled it over the line.

"Some of our football was outstanding and everything we’ve worked on this week they took into the game.

"It’s fantastic to get the first win, it will give some great confidence to the boys but more importantly it was the way we did it, it was a real top performance."

Philliskirk's youth team are next in action on Saturday, August 26 when they travel up to Blackpool to face thier under 18s in the Youth Allience Cup.
